At Child Rescue Network we believe that fear is simply not knowing what to do.  We do not want kids to be afraid of the world around them.  Instead we want to teach our children how to recognize what is a potentially dangerous situation and then how to react should the need arise!

Empty SwingIf kids know some of the tricks predators use to lure them, they can be better prepared to make decisions that could save their lives.  Child Rescue Network encourages parents to set aside a few hours to work with your child or children to teach them some easy rules and then consistently reinforce those rules at every opportunity.

When to start teaching kids about this type of safety issue depends on the development level of the child.  Some kids can comprehend the need for safety and rules at a very early age, while others may need a different approach to understand the same messages.  Keep in mind the idea is not to scare your child or make them afraid of everybody.  Never teach the "Don't talk to strangers" message!  The reality is that most people are good and would never hurt a child... in fact your child may need a "strangers" help someday to get them out of real danger!  The idea is to empower your child with the information and training to help them make the right decision at what could be a very critical moment.

Here are some safety rules that you can download and print to practice with your child regulary.  Feel free to print copies or email the link to all of your friends and family with children.  There is no charge!  There are versions geared to children in both English and Spanish and there is also a version geared more for adults that goes into further details behind some of the information.

By teaching your child these simple rules you can help eliminate opportunities for predators that may try to victimize your child.  If a child has a plan of action and knows how to react in potentially dangerous situations, then they won't necessarily need to be faced with the impossible decision of "Is this a good person who wants to help me or a bad person thay may hurt me?"

Communication is the absolute key to helping keep your child safe!  They need to know that you are their biggest advocate and their safety is your number one concern.   Your kids need to be able to feel that they can tell you anything and that you will help them through it.   Make sure that when your child becomes interested in exploring his or her sexuality, and they will, that you are the source for their information.  If you are uncomfortable and need help there are resources listed elsewhere on this web site.

Remember if your kids can't come to you, can't talk with you, then to whom are they talking?

The Internet is an incredible tool, a wonderful place to learn, share ideas, communicate, and conduct business.  However, just like the real world the virtual one has some dangers.

There are now over a billion people connected to the Internet... as a parent would you allow your child to roam around a city of a billion people unsupervised?  Of course not, yet if your child has a computer in his or her bedroom with access to the Internet that is exactly what you're doing!
